Shop HER Closet: Tessa Virtue

Meet Tessa,

Many know her as the beloved Canadian queen of the ice and 2010 & 2018 Olympic gold medalist! As the most decorated figure skater of all time, Virtue has accomplished greatness before the age of 30. Despite announcing her retirement from skating last year, there’s no stopping her now.

“Skating has dominated my life for two decades,” said Virtue. “I feel like I can now redefine what success looks like to me, what happiness looks like. I can fail, and I will, and that’s okay, but I find the whole thing can be invigorating—even if it’s daunting too.”

Virtue will start her MBA at Queen’s University this summer with plans to pursue an entrepreneurial endeavour already in the works. Her tenacity, determination, and big-heart are just some of the reasons why she’s one to watch, and we’re sure this dynamo will continue to be remembered for accomplishments both on and off the rink. Plus, we can’t help but covet her wardrobe of contemporary feminine finds from Self-Portrait, Maje, Herve Leger and more.

Now’s your exclusive chance to Shop Her Closet for an amazing cause – Tessa Virtue Edition 01!

How would you describe your personal style?

I’d say my personal style is classic and refined, but with a twist.  I love mixing quality, high-fashion pieces with eccentric or inexpensive items.  I’ve always considered myself a risk-taker when it comes to clothing choices, but what I understand better now is that it’s simply the way I like to express myself.  Fashion is the ultimate vehicle to showcase creativity, personality, mood, and purpose!

Who has been a strong female inspiration in your life and why?

My mom is an incredibly inspiring woman – her fierce independence, ability to find strength through vulnerability, composure, a keen sense of intuition, and grace make me strive to be like her every single day.  Also – she’s my stylist!  I feel like the luckiest girl to have someone like her in my corner.  From a fashion standpoint, she’s the kind of woman who goes to bed looking chic in ironed pajamas… popped collar, rolled sleeves, and all!

Tell us about the advice that just stuck with you.

From a young age, I was encouraged to trust my instincts and be myself.  This simple advice is easier said than done, but in a world with such specific standards for women, we could all use a reminder to embrace the things that make us unique.”

What is inspiring you right now?

“I’m inspired to be brave, as I watch my two nieces grow up and strive to create a better world for them.”

What your choice book/Netflix binge at the moment?

“I’m reading Normal People by Sally Rooney and watching CHEER on Netflix!”

Night on the town or night in your comfies at home?

“I’ll choose a comfy night in almost every day of the week 🙂

Heels or flats?

“Heels!  Perhaps because I spent most of my life in either skates or running shoes, it still feels like a treat to don a great pair of stilettos.”

What is your guilty pleasure?

“McCain Deep‘n Delicious Chocolate Cake.”

Favourite piece in your closet?

“The Gucci Dionysus purse I got from The Upside.  When I’m not wearing it, it is perched in my closet as if on display at a museum :)”

You are constantly on-the-go – what are a few must-bring items?

“I never leave home without candles, books, chocolate, and my passport.  Oh, and a scarf or two – it’s the easiest way to transform an outfit!”

What is your favourite resale find?

“I found a Jean Paul Gaultier off-the-shoulder blazer years ago and still adore it.  I also just purchased a vintage Chanel belt from the cutest second-hand shop in Bangkok!”

Which charity will you be supporting with Shop Her Closet

“I’m proud to be supporting Dress for Success – a worldwide charity aimed at empowering women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

What is life like after skating?

“Life after skating is wonderful, honestly.  While I miss the structure of training, I have really enjoyed embracing new challenges and re-defining who am I without skates.  I’m feeling incredibly fulfilled by design collaborations, mentorship opportunities, charity involvement, school, and speaking events.”
